Hi All, I'm posting this question on behalf of a friend. (No, really!) She homeschools her K and 4th grade kids, but her 8th grader attends to a Christian school that only goes through 8th grade. They are now in trying to plan for next year. Her son is truly an advanced student, and definitely needs to be challenged academically. He is in the process of applying to a few area private high schools, but will need a pretty significant scholarship to be able to attend. They haven't totally ruled out the public high school, but among other issues, it really isn't a great school. My friend would like to homeschool him, offering opportunities for advanced online courses and eventually he would be able to take college-level classes. He is not at all interested in being homeschooled. So now (in the event that the scholarship doesn't pan out) his parents are trying to decide whether they should just say "Look, we've considered all of the options, we think that this one is best." and let him deal with it, or if they should let him go to the public high school and deal with the accompanying issues. Do you know of anyone who has brought an unwilling teen home for high school? How did it work out? Thanks! :001_smile:

I have to say that I agree wholeheartedly. This is really serious. For his sake, and for the sake of any women in his future, please get him the help that he needs. I'm so sorry that you're going through this. I can imagine how heavy your heart must be tonight. :grouphug:

Is there anyone here who has an older copy of TOG, Year 1? I'm trying to figure out which of my old books can be used again, as I suspect that some of them are no longer in print and have been replaced. I'd prefer to use the old ones that I already have, if possible. (In case you're wondering, I owned Y1 before the digital version was released. I sold my old print copy because I knew I'd want the digital version. Now I've come full circle. When I purchased Y1 for the second time, I bought the digital/print combo.) Thanks!

I agree, too. This really felt like a professional in-service. They spoke to us as if we were intelligent people. There are some speakers who treat these types of workshops like pep rallies or something. I wasn't looking for rah-rah, I was looking for practical information and a sharing of knowledge. I was not disappointed in the least.

First off, I've really enjoyed reading the responses from others who attended the conference. I would like to respond to each one, but time does not permit right now. Nevertheless, yeah. Yup. I know. Absolutely. :D Now, about the new literature guide: I was very intrigued by it, so I bought it. I like the idea of having prompts throughout the book to remind us of poetics and to have succinct definitions of some of the vocabulary words. I'm especially excited about including The Wind in the Willows, because my two younger children attempted to read it this year, and both gave up in despair. I think that this will be a gentler approach, because I really want them to read this book. I have to run out right now, but later I can look at my notes to tell you more.

...you should be kicking yourself right now! It was really fabulous. I am so glad that I was able to be there and to glean so much knowledge from two people who have really helped me to shape my vision for homeschooling. SWB was great, it was such a pleasure to hear her speak. She may not feel like talking again for another week, but she shared such a wealth of information with us! MCT was just amazing. Now I completely understand why he can't be videotaped. You have to see him in person to get the full effect of his presentations. And last (but by no means least), it was so great to be able to meet a number of WTMers, especially some like Cleo and OsmosisMom with whom I go waaaaaay back on these boards! If they ever do a conference like this again, do not hesitate to register. In fact, make your cousin reschedule her wedding or let your family eat beans for a month or skip your local convention...whatever it takes! And a special thanks to our own Capt_Uhura, for all of your hard work. We are all so grateful for your efforts! :grouphug:

I haven't used DIVE for higher math, but I used it for my dd when she was doing 3rd grade math. She didn't respond well to them. When I introduced my ds14 to Saxon Algebra this year I decided to use the Art Reed DVDs that were recommended by a friend. So far, so good. :001_smile:
