  1. Thanks for the ideas, everyone! While at the store yesterday afternoon, I picked up a nice, plump chicken, close to eight pounds. I plan to roast it at a lower temp with the cover on for at least the first 2 hours. Blessings! :)
  2. The last time I attempted to roast a chicken in my oven, within 20 minutes chicken fat was spattering all over the stove and smoke was pouring out of the stove vents, setting off the smoke alarms. In other words, it was a disaster!! :glare: What did I do wrong? I think it weighed around 7 pounds; I was told I shouldn't cover it, but of course if I don't, I fear that the same scenario will happen. Do I dare to make another attempt at making a roast chicken for my family? Any instructions from you wise WTM ladies would be most appreciated. I'm all ears. :bigear:
  3. I lost my mother nearly 14 years ago. She died suddenly of a brain aneurysm when I was pg. with my younger dd. It was devastating--we were so close. My faith in God was huge in getting through the grief, but time was necessary as well. The first year was excruciating, the second year was slightly easier. As each year passed it got a bit easier and easier to deal with the loss. But there's no way around the grief--you must go through it. So sorry for your loss. :(
  4. Your pastor is trying to help your mother's boyfriend to stop practicing a sin which the Bible is clear about--having s*xual relations when not married. It's true that fornication isn't worse than other sins, for sin is sin in God's eyes, but the Bible does teach that when we "practice" sin, i.e., continue in it without repentance, we are in spiritual danger. Consider these verses from I John (And please, do read them in context): "No one who lives in Him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen Him or known Him." v. 6 "No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God." v. 9 And from the gospel of John: "If you love Me, you will obey what I command." v. 15 This does not mean that we Christians will not fall into sin at times, but clearly if we refuse to turn away from known sin, and struggle against it, then according to God's word, we do not truly "know" Him. I commend your pastor for caring enough about your mother's boyfriend to confront him about his sin. It's so much easier to pretend it isn't happening, but that would not be a good servant of Jesus Christ, would it?
  5. I'd wait as it sounds like #2 is on the mend. As long as he's drinking fluids and seems happy, he should be fine. However, I'd switch from the apple juice which can prolong diarhea. White grape juice is what our pediatrician recommended for these types of symptoms though you likely don't have it on hand.
  6. I usually require that my dc read most of the books in a core, but not necessarily on SL's time line. What they haven't finished by the end of the school year I allow them to finish them over the summer. If they strongly dislike one or two books in a core, I allow them to drop them, but no more than two. HTH!
  7. Just want to give a thumbs up for the TT curriculum... I've heard so many mixed reviews here -- for me, the proof is in the pudding! :) Dd15 completed TT's Alg. I course and scored quite high in her IOWA standardized testing, including the math portion. Dd 13 completed TT's Math 7 and Pre-Alg. courses and has also done splendidly on her IOWA's. Neither of my dds like math! A very satisfied customer here!
  8. Have you heard of Write at Home's online writing courses? My older dd took Essay I last year and enjoyed and did quite well in it. This coming year in 10th grade she'll be doing their one semester English Composition course. If you'd like to check them out, here's a link to their website: http://www.writeathome.com/
  9. I'm assuming that many of your high schoolers are using laptops for their schoolwork. What type of desk do they have it on as they work? My 15 yo will use a laptop this year but all the computer desks are for PC's. TIA -- I'd appreciate any input/links you might have to share! :)
  10. I'd call your doc about that and, if the intestinal discomfort worsens, ask him about changing to a different antibiotic. Years back when I took Zithromax for bronchitis I was horribly nauseous by the third day. I called the doctor and he changed it to something else which my system tolerated far better. Meanwhile, my dh and dds can all tolerate Zithromax. Go figure! Feel better soon!
  11. The schedule looks great! What you're feeling right now is completely normal! I went through the same feelings, and dd went through 9th grade with no trouble and we're now looking [more confidently] at 10th!
  12. Why do you think your cat failed miserably? I was thinking that if we get a youngish female (I know the females are the hunters) it might work . . .
  13. I'm wondering if we should get a cat and keep it in our basement and garage (allowed outdoors too) to keep rodents in control. It would be kind of a barn cat. We live near woods and have dozens of chipmunks just outside our house. Also, when cold weather hits, mice come in to make their homes in our cellar. There used to be neighborhood cats which kept the rodent population in check, but the owners have moved and the population is growing. Our neighbor told us that before the cats came to the area, there was even a rat problem! The problem is that I'm allergic to cats and can't have one in the house. The basement is warm enough because the furnace is there. My dds would love to have a cat, but understand that it wouldn't be allowed in the house. We do have house pets: a dog, a rabbit and 3 parakeets. I've discussed it with dh and he's open to it. Has anyone on these boards ever done this? Would love some advice!
  14. Have you checked out Sonlight Curriculum's microscope which they sell with their Biology course? It looks like a great deal to me. $240
  15. Yep, here I am! :seeya: I usually haunt the Sonlight forums, but this is my second fave board. I've gotten so much valuable input here. I might even change my SL user name to the name I use here since they're offering the opportunity to do so. Problem is, I need to offer second and third choices and I haven't any. :001_huh: Suggestions, anyone? :D (I wish they had smilies on facebook.)
  16. From reading I've done on the breeds, a black labrador retriever fits all your requirements.
  17. Excellent resource: "Worried No More -- Help and Hope for Anxious Children" by Aureen Pinto Wagner, Ph.D.
  18. After using Sonlight for many years, I'm leaning towards Notgrass' World History for my budding 10th grader. What in particular did you like about Notgrass?
  19. Hi Kareni, I tried your link for Notgrass posts but it doesn't work. Try again? :001_smile: Thanks!
