  1. What a great Idea...I don't want to bore her with learning things she knows because she'll tell me plainly. But to give her something she thinks doesn't already know would be an even better idea. Do you mind me asking what spelling book your using?
  2. Thanks for the link Lady Dusk...that brings more questions but it was still helpful. The spelling rules thing is a neato trick that I hadn't thought about. We never used OPGR. Buying it or checking it out of the library wouldn't be horrible in case I wanted to use it for my youngest. I'm now wondering a spelling program thats uses the spelling rules directly! Ahhh so many more questions!!! LOL
  3. Would you teach phonics for a child who reads well? I'm trying get my schedule togeather for our up coming year and I have a space blocked our for reading... But as far as teaching reading as the WTM suggests?? it seems pointless. Now grammar I get teaching that but if she's doing writing strands will it be redundant? Just looking for suggestions for people who've been there.
  4. Can you tell how excited I am!! My mom and two SS Queens will be with me. My oldest is going to the kids program though!

What about the state requirements of the family...I live in Pa and for a K'er the list of things they want you to do is huge.... Couple that with the fear of failure and who knows what kind of family opposition and there is no telling where that family might end up at the end of the year. That being said does that mean that some of the suggestions ( because they are just that) in the book Will Not work for everyone, even the ones that do want to classically educate. So to come on here to ask for suggestions or help when you've tried something and don't know what to do and to hear " You should just read the book" is kinda like a stab to the chest! Just wanted to throw my 2cents in because I have felt the wrath of the " I've been homeschooling for years and your doing it wrong" crowd a few times..... Besides that If it were just for WTMers then the rest would be banned wouldn't they??
  6. I truly forgot about the perfect body!! But really.....there are things that I'd rather be doing things other than cleaning but i realize that I like a clean house....I also like to do lots of stuff with my kids!!!
  7. My Babies have maybe too much time.....you should just see the things they do with tinker toys it's kinda amazing!!! I really think i'm just too hard on myself....but I understand what your saying!!!:tongue_smilie:
  8. I think that I suffer from a severe form of perfection-itist....If I can't do it perfectly then I don't do it...I really am starting to understand that that's not the best example to set for my girls..I know that it just shows them that learning from failure is not important or that trying your best is not worth it! But Believe me I'm starting to see the error of my ways...I know I can't do it all...or at the least that if i did it all it wouldn't all be done well. I really just want to be the kind of Mom my girls can learn from the right stuff to do more than the what not to do stuff.... But having said all that I think that all the advice and honesty in this thread has been and will be so very helpful!!!! So thanks ladies!! And Keep it coming!:001_smile:
  9. [quote=mom4him;1521067 I not only am who I am but I simply can't be those other people. The amazing thing is I no longer want to be. We have found what is right for us and even though it changes a bit as time goes on it is what works for us. Be who you are. Find out what is right for you and your family and be comfortable with it. I had to accept that I wasn't depriving my dc from anything that really mattered. If those things are important then do them but not because 'everyone else does'. So true so very true! Thanks you so much for your truthful and honest answer! Thank you for your encouragement!!
  10. You are an awesome motivator and I'm so profoundly greatful for your response!!!!

  12. My child even though she's only five is the same way and we've replaced pants so many time i can't keep count!! We like the Old Navy Skinny pants and the Slim Childrens place pants. We also found some pants at Jcpenny's that were slim and long. I really want to try to make some pants for her but I can never find the time!!!
  13. There are some others that I want to give up but I don't want to pack on too much so that it becomes too overwhelming and selfish. If that makes any sense!!!
  14. I'm not sure how everyone else does this? Maybe you chose to keep it private but I like to have accountability in lots of place especially in the place i'm prone to do the things I'm giving up!!! So I'll start! I'm giving up : In exchange for: Junk Food snacks Fruit and veggie snacks Sweets Water Meat 30 Mins of movement Complaining Speaking Life (looking for and acknowledging good Gossip Kepping my mouth shut Procrastinating Looking at my time as a trust from God
  15. Does anyone know of any and where? There was one that closed in North hills but now we can't find another!
  16. I just worry because not only have we been behind she's far exceeding all the stuff we have anyway. She's been reading well for about a year now so we are jusy working on comprehension and reading out loud with the proper inflections and all that jazz. She just keeps going and keeps wanting more and more and more and I'm feeling like if we were on track it still wouldn't be enough. I don't want to stunt her because life happened to us.....But with that being said I thank you all for your comments hugs thoughts and suggestions. Now all I have to do is figure out how to find a challenging plan for her going forward!
  17. has some books on tape that my girls like to this day. We also did longer books like the wizard of oz and the Kate di Camillo books. they enjoyed those!
  18. You so far off track of your curriculmn you couldn't finish the year in time for the next even if you tried. We had a lot of MAJOR set backs last year. In july we wanted to start school I totaled our first car no injuries at all, then my husband lost his job, the car window to our replacment car got busted out and our gps was stolen, then we got into a major car accident ( car flipping over twice kids in the car) on the way to visit my mil. Not to mention the fact that my daughter just hasn't really vibed with the curriculmn in the first place...she thinks it boring and not enough to do. it's just been one life shuffle after the next. So do I chuck the stuff and try to do something else to prepare her for first grade work? I just really don't know what to do?
  19. But I'm gonna give you lots and lots of congrats and credit for stepping out of your comfort zone. Good job and keep trying new things!! Way to go! I love to cook and anytime someone tries something that they are aprehensive about they deserve a pat on the back!:001_smile:
  20. She asked so many questions about it when we left about anger and sadness. She made comments on Max's behavior and on what was and wasn't appropriate expression of anger and sadness. She made the connections between Max and Carol( the wild thing voiced by James Gandolfini) and Claire (Max's sister) and KW (the wild thing voiced by Lauren Ambrose). She even understood the connections between KW's owl friends and his sister's rowdy friends at the begining of the movie. She loved he music and how it fit the moods of the scenes....My husband and I were a bit worried when we saw the direction of the movie but My 5 year old understood it.
  21. Had a bad dr visit yesterday!!!! Mine didn't bite but she did try to turn the needle on the nurse. Then talked constant while her sister was trying to have her time with the doc!!!!
  22. My great aunt who was in her 50's died of breast cancer that spread to her lungs! My mother had breast cancer twice and is cancer free her close friend however lost her fight! I will definatly be praying for this family!
  23. You can say that because you lived in "da hood" that you know and this and that....but be a black person living in that hood and then tell me what it really is. I've heard poor language spoken everywhere and I mean every where. Please please please don't tell me that your experience living in "da hood" can ever live up to the reality of mine as a black person growing up in it for most of my life! Point blank if me my friends or anyone i knew talked like this third language that you speak of the taste would have been slapped out of our mouthes. Uneducated sounding people live every where not just in the hood. I'm not picking on you but really please!! That hood that you speak of has and will produce great things and people so don't under any circumstances label all of "us" as jumping on the band wagon of this non standard, sub par, third language. Hate is hate is hate and all I'm saying is what Harry Reid said had more to do with the hate he sees this country is capable of not a putting down of the president. He said people wouldn't vote for him if he was darker and spoke like a street thug. There is a diffrence if you can't see that well then what ever. But I for one am not going to get all up in arms about him saying that the country is still too racist to vote for a darker person. Truth is truth. But that 80% of African Americans speaking non standard english is bull hockey!
  24. After reading comments about 80% of African Americans speaking non standard english and jet black people with fros I just figured that I'd say something before I exploded. Where do people get this kind of information? considering that alot of African americans I know speak proper english. I'm sure that you know this because all the people you see on tv or on the radio are 80% of the black population right? I knew that as soon as I read the original post that nothing good would come of this. Just a rehashing of old political and nasty feelings. Democrats are this and Republicans are that. This is a double standard and that is a double standard. But to use this kind of comment( Harry Reid's) to start conversations about racisim is never gonna work. You wanna talk about race relations and what should be said and what shouldn't quotes coming from any politician is not a good place to start. There needs to be a better discussion starter than that. I'm just kinda hurt that those type of streotypes exist. 80% of Africans Americans in "da hood" or else where speak many diffrent things. and for that matter what's "da hood". Anyway enough of this rant.... I said all of that to say that: I don't think that the comment by Harry Reid was meant to say anything about the color of Obama's skin nor was it an insult to Obama or to dark skinned people. It said more about what he thought of the American people. There is racisim in America plain and simple. He was talking about the electability of a Black man and to be honest with you as a Black woman I think that had he been darker there's a possibility that the fight to get elected would have been harder. But the 80% comment has me hot and mad right now!!
  25. I think it's really a fun way to learn "fancy" words for a little girl. The best thing is that they are just wordy enough for my 5 year old to read ( she thinks books with the i can read stamp on them are for babies lol). Because my girls already like to dress up seeing a girl who does it all the time gives them an excuse to do it too. I really wish the author would do a spin off with Nancy's best friend Bree!!
