  1. :confused:We are on Foerster's Algebra I, lesson 7-10, #9 A gas station has just raised its prices. The attendant resets the pump but forgets to record the old prices. Rather than revealing her forgetfulness, she consults yesterday's sales report. She finds that 450 liters of regular and 320 liters of unleaded were sold for a total of $384.83. Regular was 5 cents per liter cheaper than unleaded. What were the two prices per liter yesterday? We are solving problems using two variables. This is what I have so far: x = regular y = unleaded 450 x + 320 y = 384.83 What do you do about the 5 cents cheaper? ( y - 5???) Can you walk me step by step throug this? Thanks, Melissa
  2. Thanks everybody! It helps to know that this is normal. I think we will probably go with Writing Tales and just continue with what we are doing. I may see if I can find a used copy of Classical Composition by D'Angelo to guide us a little more. Thanks again, m
  3. Here's what we are doing this year: Growing with Grammar 2 copywork ( daily) beginning cursive ( Handwriting without tears) Spelling Workout B ( I don't care for this and we will change) he reads to himself and then outloud to me hth, melissa
  4. I have an upcoming 3rd grade ds. I just ordered Sonlight 3 for next year. Looking at their Language Arts freaked me out some. It had them writing things that I don't think is possible ( at this point). Is it normal for boys to be behind in this area? He can narrate forever but for him to sit and write it hasn't happened yet. #1, he can't spell and #2, he has a hard time getting his thoughts on paper #3, he can't spell! I thought about returning the language arts and just continue with what we are doing: copywork, handwriting, Growing with Grammar ( or Shurley) and add in Writing Tales 1. Does this sound like a better idea? Thanks, melissa
  5. We've homeschooled 5 years, almost 6. We brought my middle son out of ps in the 2nd semester of 2nd grade, my oldest daughter in the 2nd semester of 5th grade and my youngest son has always been at home. melissa
  6. HOw on earth do you buy the books for this year? I just did a quick Amazon order for most of the books needed and it wasn't too terrible. I think it was about 200.00. I was trying to figure out how much this would cost. Anyway.....going into checkout.....400.00 was added for shipping. Most of the book were used and came from different locations/stores. I looked like you paid $3.99 per item for shipping. Is there anyway to get around this? Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks, Melissa
  7. I'm looking at Sonlight's 20th Century World History. I really like the literature portion but for the history it seems a little light. Can someone recommend a good narrative, easy to read history of the 20th century? If you've used this program, did you find it necessary to supplement for the history? It just doesn't seem enough to count as a high school history credit Thanks, m
  8. I have a nearly 15 yr old dd who is very involved with dance. Right now, you are walking such a fine line. You want your daughter to continue her love of ballet but you also need to get her ready for advanced studies if she chooses that later. By 10, I would say we were doing 5-6 classes a week. She does all forms of dance - tap, jazz, ballet, and modern. If ballet is her true love, I would look for a conservative classical ballet studio. You don't want her pushed to be pointe at a certain age. A good studio will look carefully at her feet and make sure she has the strength in her legs and feet to pull up on pointe. This isn't something that can happen at a certain age since everyone's development is different. Dance can become a full-time commitment very easily. We are doing about 13 classes a week now and my daughter will add 4-6 more next year. Maybe the best thing to do is talk to the studio director and your daughter. It seems like dancers have to decide so young whether they want to be serious about it or just have fun. Sorry for rambling.......again! melissa
  9. I would love to get a peek at Medieval England. Maybe be a damsel in distress for a day or two and have a handsome knight rescue me! I would also love to see what Ancient Greece looks like. I would like to go back to Jesus' time and listen to him. I don't think I'd like to stay in either time period long. melissa
  10. Ice Crunching Reckless drivers Smacking food or gum People who put their dirty dishes on the counter instead of IN THE EMPTY DISHWASHER!!! melissa
  11. Take a look at Ambleside Online's high school geography choices. They use whole books. We've read a couple and have been very pleased. melissa
  12. My husband's great uncle is George Jones! I haven't met any other famous people but he's met a ton of country singers. m
  13. I grew up in a small town in Deep East Texas college in Columbia, Missouri moved to Dallas moved to El Dorado, Arkansas moved back to North Dallas area trying to convince my husband to try for a job in either Denmark or Switzerland. What educational experiences we would have! melissa
  14. I've been a SAHM for nearly 15 years and wouldn't go back in a heartbeat! I love being at home with my kids and being able to do things for my husband. melissa
  15. OSU has a wonderful German program. I cannot say enough good things about it. I do believe it is for high school levels or possibly an advanced middle schooler. It is worth every penny. hth, m
  16. We tried this in the fall and I did not like it at all. Needless to say we shelved it! Of course, everyone likes something different. See if you can find a sample schedule. There was plenty fof work or middle school. It just didn't work for us. hth, m
  17. This is what we are doing this year for 9th. Algebra I ( Foerster's) Natural Science I ( Scholars Online) Hake Grammar Literature ( we are just reading different books and testing this year) Writing ( HOme2Teach and I doubled her up for the last part of the year by adding WRite@Home Essay course) History - Truthquest Middle Ages German ( OSU) Latin - combination of Cambridge Latin I and Henle Vocabulary for the HS Student Dance - she probably dances about 15 hrs per week so this is our PE She probably spends about 4-6 hours per day and maybe 1-2 hours on the weekend since we have a strange schedule 2 days a week. melissa
  18. Try Prentice Hall....Google Foerster's Algebra I classic edition. I bought mine there and it was reasonably priced. Finding the solutions manual is another story! They are very hard tofind! hth, melissa
  19. Our hits for the year are: Prentice Hall Life Science Foerster's Algebra I ( except for those word problems!) Growing with Grammar 1/2 Sequential Spelling Truthquest MIddle Ages Our misses: Spelling Workout Write Guide ( we just did one month and that was plenty...it was pricey and we got nothing out of it!) Winterpromise MIddle Ages - this was a total bomb! melissa
  20. :eek:My ds has to go on an elimination diet for the next 10 days. No wheat or dairy. What on earth do I feed this already picky eater who loves his carbs and dairy? Suggestions for lunches and breakfasts would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, melissa
  21. Here's my problem with someone requiring me to have a teaching certificate. There are teachers in our public schools who are not qualified to teach but they are still teaching. There are English teachers teaching science and math and really not knowing what they are doing. Is it fair to require ( hypothetically) one group to have these outrageous demands placed upon them while another group is free from them? Would that not be discrimination? ( I hate to throw that word out there - but since we are speaking hypothetically...... I will). I think the NEA needs to pull it's head out of their rear and put the needs of children ahead of their own political agenda! Sorry....I feel so strongly on this subject........ melissa
  22. What about rice cereal? Rice is cheap and you just add a little milk, butter, sugar and some raisin or whatever else you want. Mine really like this. If you use brown rice, just soak it the night before and you can't tell a difference! Do you make biscuits from scratch? Not too expensive. hth, melissa
  23. We have been using R&S math for some time now and I need a change! I like the program but after seeing the same thing 5 times, I need a break!!!!! This would be for my soon to be 3rd grader. He's working 2 grades ahead but we've hit a wall with fractions! I wouldn't be opposed to go down a level. Until the fraction chapter, he's just breezed along with no problems what so ever. Can someone recommend a good math program that is similar but not so black & white? I like how it reviews. I don't like BJU math but other than that, we are open. Thanks, Melissa
  24. We are using the German course from OSU this year and love it! It is well-organized and if the student has a problem or is confused about something, he/she can call in. My dd is learning so much. We will continue to use this class for the rest of high school! melissa
  25. Quiver, We have all had serious doubts about our qualifications to teach our children. I have a degree and find out every single day that my education was totally lacking. You've been on this board for a long time and it seems to me that you are doing a great job with your kids. Only a dedicated parent truly cares whether or not their child learns. Aren't a couple of your kids in college? Does it really matter if you already knew the material or you are having to learn it with them? I think you just need to find your strengths and have confidence in your abilities. I have found that there a some things in high school I just cannot teach. In our very rural school, things like Pre-Cal and AP classes just were not offered. I outsource what I can afford and we struggle our way through the rest. Having read your posts forever......I know that you are a parent who loves her kids and does what is best for them. What more can they ask for? sorry for rambling, melissa
