If you have a reverse osmosis system...

I think ours cost about $500 but that was about 20 years ago. We change filters every year so if my dh does it it costs $35 or so (maybe less) but we usually have a company change them out which costs about 85 or so.

The tech told me the last time he was here that they won't change mine any more because it is over 20 years old! We've never had any problems at all with it so I was taken aback about it but I guess they don't mess with the older units in case a part breaks and they get the blame. I would sign a waiver or something but he wouldn't even entertain that idea. He said only option was to service it ourselves or buy a new unit.

We have had one at all 3 of our houses. My dh buys the one at Home Depot for $125 - $150ish. Then it just requires changing the filters and we make them last a LONG time even with 7 people. We only have it hooked up to a separate tap and the ice maker. We had a friend who got into whole house RO system sales and he was positive ours couldn't do as good a job as the big companies. He came out and tested all our water and had to concede that it was doing just as well.

whole house RO?    That is insane.   Whole house - something makes sense (but RO for the whole house).

We went with Lowe's or Home Depot ones.  Has been perfectly fine.  Might have been the same one as Connib's

DH installed, so that was zero cost.

But, if you already have one, swapping it out should be no big deal.

It’s under sink. It’s atill insanely expensive from reading this thread. I think they’re enriching my water in gold or something Edited by madteaparty

Back when I was young and I worked for a company that sold water treatment door-to-door, the whole house thing cost $3000, or maybe a tish more.    The salesman made $1000, and they paid us telemarketers to setup the appointments.  If someone called and just wanted to buy one, like they changed houses.  They'd say that the caller was lucky, because someone's financing fell through, and they could sell one for $1200.
