Re typing because my previous one was full of typos! I am so sorry!

HO is perfect for those ages. Add in a timeline and extra reading.

We are using them as a spine for 5th-8th and are very happy with them. Dd reads and we discuss. She reads literature and library books to supplement. She writes about history - summary or outline once a week. We use the three books on a 4 year cycle, so not speeding through.

This is what my DD is doing too and it's working really really well. This will be her 8th grade year and she's on Volume 3. She likes to read Mystery of History along with it too, but that's just because she likes it, not because I think she needs it as a supplement.

  • 2 weeks later...

We used Volume 1 with my 4th and 5th graders last year and this year we are using Volume 2.  We also used the Oxford University Press World in Ancient Times series last year and will use the OUP Medieval and Early modern books this year.  I will do the OUP books as a read aloud and assign reading from the K12 HO book.

Scout, are you planning to supplement HO3 with anything specific? Because it is shorter and I will not have the OUP books to use, I am contemplating using SOTW4, but I am open to other suggestions.  We do follow a lot of the living book reading suggestions in the TWTM (latest edition) already.

We are not there yet!

I am doing a 4 yr cycle with the 3 books, so we won't get to vol 3 and late modern history til next year, 2018-19. I use the SOTW timeline since Ds is reading that. We are not quite done with our yr. 2, so we will move into Early Modern in October, I think. We always take rabbit trails and take forever to finish!

So far, I have used literature books and meaty non-fiction picture books from the library. I have found that 3-5 library books and one novel a month is a good mix for my Dd. History is not her favorite thing. (So hard, b/c it is mine!)

Thinking about movies to supplement also, but haven't had time to really think about that.

Sorry I am not more helpful!

No, we are on a similar schedule. We won't be doing HO3 until 2018 also. I am just trying to get a skeleton plan going.
