moonlight
We read a couple of books a while ago about kids keeping a box/jar of words that they like. My son and I started that and we have a box full of words that he likes. He is 8 years old. What are some things we could do with a box full of words? The ideas I've come up with so far: -pulling out a few words and coming up with a silly sentence -separating them into groups: nouns, adjectives, verbs, etc. -finding words that he doesn't know the meaning of and defining them Does anyone have any other ideas? Thanks!
aaplank
I have an index file of interesting and new vocab words. Most of them have pictured to go with it and a short and simple definition. When my kids are writing rough drafts of stories or essays, I spread them out all over the table and have them choose at least one of the words in their writing. I don't want them to just pick a word and build their writing aroung the word. That's why I spread them out over a large surface area. As they write, usually one of the words pops out at them as a perfect word choice. It's actually quite fun.
readinmom
Buy a small canvas at Michael's or Hobby Lobby, mod podge the words on as you continue throughout the year. It would make for interesting art work, and as a reference source for him.
desertflower
Etymology? I don't know if that will be any fun. Mad libs? After you have separated them into grammar categories, flip them over and pick one from each category when it comes up in the mad lib. Word jar is a cool idea. CardinalAlt
Found poetry! Grab a handful, and arrange as many words as you can.
EndOfOrdinary
Find images on Google (with Mom sitting right there to help filter out searches which could lead astray) or in magazines which could fit all sorts of words. Just interesting and neat pictures. Then play memory or matching games seeing how you can have the words fit different facets of different pictures.
