Jacob's Algebra... Solution Guide or Teacher's Manual

Recommended Posts

If you are talking about the Teacher Guide askdrcallahan sells then it is the tests with the problems worked.  so basically tests answer key.  I only use it when grading the tests, but it's very thorough!  So I use both.  Just the test key isn't used as much.

Seems like I saw a 'teacher manual' for Jacob's at a used store but I don't recall what was in it, sorry.

There's a Teacher's Guide to Elementary Algebra that goes with the book.  The description I found was lesson plans and answers to the examples or something.  Just wondering if I need it!

We use the TM, mostly for checking answers. I would consider it necessary unless you plan to solve all the answers yourself. I think we bought it on eBay.

Each chapter in the text is set up into 4 sections: I as review, II and III which are identical skills, and IV which is a challenge puzzle. The answers for set II are in the back f the textbook but you'll need the TM for the others, plus the test answers. The solutions, unfortunately, aren't given, however.

You need solutions.  That's the only part of the teacher's guide that we have used thus far -it has solutions to the Set 1, 3 and 4 problems.  Only the Set 2 problem solutions are found in the back of the book.

It does also include a lesson plan for presenting each lesson.  It suggests transparencies to show and what to say, although of course you don't actually have the transparencies.  You could write the problems on a whiteboard.  Often it kicks off the lesson with a problem to solve together that introduces the lesson concept.  We haven't used it yet, as Ch. 1-5 were review and done independently.  Now that she's into totally new stuff, I'm thinking I might pull it out and take a look! I had kind of forgotten that it had this additional material.

Rose--I'm curious about which guide you are using? We have A Teachers Guide to Elementary Algebra, and it does have the lesson plans and transparencies and so forth, but not solutions to every problem. Only answers. How to reach those answers (solutions) would be a great help for the future. Thanks!

Thanks, Rose. Guess I'm off to find a copy of Solutions, too!

According to the comments on Amazon, it doesn't provide solutions either, or at least not to most of the problems. Looks like another answer guide from what I can tell. That's too bad--I'm sure a lot of us would benefit from having the solutions process for each question spelled out for us.

I posed this question to Rainbow Resource last week, and here is the response from Deanne:

"Thank you for your email. We have different resources for teaching Jacob’s Elementary Algebra. Item #009966 is the SM from Dr. Callahan. This course offers supportive instructional DVDs and this newest Solutions Manual which offers solutions for all the  problems. Item #010026 is from Jacob’s, this Teacher's Guide contains lesson plans and (most importantly)

answers to the problems. This is only the final answer to the problem and not step-by-step solutions. Worth mentioning, this TG is not currently available, as Jacobs ran into publishing issues."
