Any of you go camping with just your kids?

Just mom and maybe young daughters?

We've gone with dad and teens, but I'm wondering about just me and dd9. Just the two of us heading to a campground for a night or two. Would you feel safe?

Oh, we've gone with other families - I guess I'm just wondering if I were the only adult and we didn't know anyone else at the campground. What would your parameters be for that type of camping.

(I feel like this is awkwardly worded - I think y'all understand what I'm asking.)

I haven't, but I would. My only conditions would be that I was familiar with the place and felt comfortable there, and that the facilities were adequate. I wouldn't go off to an unknown place or do rustic camping just all alone with a child. That is outside my comfort zone. A special weekend at our favorite spot? Sure.

My son and I camped quite a bit for a few years with just the two of us when he was between nine and 12. We used to do a lot of road trips to and from Florida , where we live, to Virginia, where my daughter was in college.

We used our tent often, but also occasionally rented a cabin at a campground. It saved space in the car not having to haul the tent and was also more comfortable in certain kinds of weather.

I'm not sure what parameters would be involved?

If I went camping with just my kids:

I'd choose a fairly well-populated campground, not one where there were only a few other folks camping -- preferably a national or state park, with either a periodic ranger patrol, or a campground host.

I wouldn't allow solo trips to the restroom.

And then we'd enjoy our adventure!

I've been wanting to, but haven't made it happen yet.

There is a nearby national park in which the conservation / education arm has an annual family camp weekend.  It's for a couple of nights, and they provide the tent.  If it could work with my schedule, I would do that with my 7yo daughters.  It's not really "alone," but I assume it would give the kids a taste of tent camping without a lot of the fuss for me.

So, you might look to see if there is an option like this in your area.
