Afterschool Routine

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

We've homeschooled ds from the beginning but this year he really wants to try school for social reasons. He connects more with his sports friends (who all attend the same school) than our local homeschool group. Dh and I are taking him to tour the local ps school tomorrow and we've read the parent handbook and talked to a few other parents involved in the school about homework expectations, etc.

I'd love to know if there are any specifics you'd recommend looking at or asking the principal while touring the school? Also, how do you all handle the afternoon routine? Do you begin homework studies immediately after school or do you let your dc play outside and burn off energy first? It's looking like this school is light on homework (30 minutes for 4/5th grades plus 20min reading). If this is similar to what your dc do, can you tell me how much you add to that? I'm mainly concerned about keeping up his literature reading. He free reads each night before bed (currently the Percy Jackson series) but also reads during lesson time currently for history and language arts. I'd like to have a good biography going for him for history and then alternate to classical literature for his reading log time for the school.

Can you tell me what time your dc get to bed after homework, dinner, bath or shower, and if it changes on the afternoons you have sports practice/music lessons?

Basically, I'm all ears. Whatever you want to share with me about afterschooling I'd love to hear it! I'm trying to wrap my head around how it will work. Ds loves to play outside with friends afterschool but none of them do homework right after school. They all stay up later than we do and do it after dinner. I guess I'm looking for alternatives. Dh is concerned that ds might need an hour after he comes home to run around and play, but with sports practice and piano, hen dinner/shower/reading time, I'm not sure how well this will work.

Thank you!

How old is your son?

For my girls, who are in 2nd grade, if they have a physical activity after school (which they usually do), then I don't feel the need for them to have additional time in the evening for "running around."  A little chill time, perhaps 10 minutes, is sufficient during the after-dinner hours.

Backing up to school dismissal - my kids go to aftercare from about 3pm to 6pm.  In aftercare they are to do some reading and math and perhaps some homework, but then they have a couple of hours for free play with friends, both indoor and outdoor.  I pick them up and we do dinner/activities before coming home most days.  Outside of homework, I try to do some additional math most days, though it does not always happen.  We do extra reading in nonfiction areas that they are studying in school, when we have time.  And they have piano practice, which currently happens 2-3 days a week.  There are other things I add if homework is light etc.  They do more on the weekends (including "real literature") since they have more time.

Currently my kids get about 9.5-10 hours of sleep.

here's our 'normal' routine, but my kids are a lot younger (3 & 5):

Mon: pick up from afterschool care at 5.30-6pm, have dinner, 7pm - 7.30pm do some afterschool work, 7.30pm -- quick computer/legos/etc time, bedtime is at 8pm

Tues/thurs: swim lessons till 6.30pm & we don't get home till 7pm. they are normally pretty worn out by then, so some light reading, games then bed at 8pm.

we do more work on fridays (if I'm not scheduled to work) & the weekends.

I pick ds6 up from school at 3 except Friday when he has afterschool care. One other day he has an extracurricular - usually gym on Mondays at his school at 3.45 so we hang round and play then I pick up ds4 from day are during the class. This term it will be soccer on Tuesdays which I will share taking all the kids with a friend. We generally get home about 4, snack and have the boys 15 mins each computer time so I can have a break. At 4.30 to 5 we try and do half an hour of something then baths, tea and bed at 7 to 7.30.

If your son is a morning person I would consider doing homework etc in the morning so he can play outside until dinner and still have a decent bed time. You can slip in a couple of read alouds during dinner etc.

Eta. We don't do this because although ds6 is a morning person ds4 and I are not - we do do maths orally in bed in the morning sometimes though and if he has got to a good bit ds6 will read to me while I rest.
