Anyone not like Apologia General Science?

Recommended Posts

I posted this on another board and have not gotten responses and then decided to post here because I figured I would be more likely to get people with experience with Apologia here. So here is the post.

My dd, who is very religious and a heavy creationist..so this is not her issue...is complaining that her Apologia General Science is not sciencey enough. She says they are spending too much time talking about how science is so wrong and very little time talking about actual science. Maybe this is just going on in the begining? I am not sure. But, I do not have the time or energy to put in to teaching her science myself so I am afraid to drop it and go to a more teacher intensive program. I am unsure what to do.

Should we just give it more time? She reads a fair amount of science and watches science shows on the side anyway.

My DD is really enjoying the BJU Life Science class - we are doing it with Homesat, but you can buy it on DVD.

She started General Science, but wasn't as into it as she is this one. She'd still be doing General, but we were going with Homesat for a variety of reasons, so i switched her over. Today she keeps calling her grandpa and has him doing her experiment at the same time! LOL!!

YOu can see a sample here: http://www.bjupress.com/distance_learning/homeschool/courses/

How many modules has she gone thru? Maybe it will pick up? Have you asked her to show you what she is talking about? I just last night gave the friend her book back, so i can't look at it.

 I know you have been having other struggles with her. I'm glad she is interested in science and is at least telling you what is wrong with the class! LOL!!

I have heard that a lot of people don't like General Science. My dd didn't like it, but I told her to soldier on because everyone says all the other Apologia sciences are MUCH better.

General Science is all about laying the foundation for how to do things in later sciences. Even Dr. Wile admits it's pretty dry compared to the rest of his curriculum. :)

Both my dc liked it after completing the first few chapters. In fact, because they are so long and tedious, I studied the first two chapters (the history of science ) with my dd and then let her skip to the life science portions (I no longer have the book, so I don't know the chapters) which she completed on her own. After completing the remainder of the book, she returned to the physical science and earth science chapters (I believe these are where dc get bogged down with all of the carbon dating etc.). This eliminated her balking;)

My daughter really enjoyed this book. She would tell people all the time that she loved her science book because it was like the author was actually talking to her. So, maybe she likes the "chatty tone"? Since it is a "General Science" book, maybe you could consider if your daughter has already covered many of the topics in the past and is ready to move on to Physical Science. We have all of the Apologia books up through Chemistry and have enjoyed them.
