Best Dicken's novel for a 15y/o?...
SwimmerMom replied to Michelle in GA's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
The Pickwick Papers!! It's the stories of a group of 4 British guys and their adventures. It is HILARIOUS and not as well-known as the others. It was a great read. -
Netflix.........what plan do you have??
SwimmerMom replied to Amber's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Well, we are on the 6-at-a-time plan (5 for me/homeschool, 1 for Bean), but that is because our turn around time over here is terrible (it's usually 2-2 1/2 weeks between the time I mail a disk and when it's replacement arrives in my mailbox - for some reason the military postal system treats them as 1st class mail on the way here, but as bulk mail going back ). But, when we move back to the states, I think we'll go to the 5-at-a-time plan anyway. 1 for me 1 for Bean 1 for dh 1 for homeschool 1 for the family -
How important is Edgar Allen Poe?
SwimmerMom replied to ChildofGrace's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Coming in late here, but I would definitely consider adding in "Murders in the Rue Morgue". It's considered to be the first detective story that all other detective stories are modeled after today. You just can't skip the birth of a genre! -
I actually found the Mel Gibson version to be very disturbing! The way they portrayed the relationship between Hamlet and his mother was just weird! One of the things I loved about the Branagh version was how they picked it up and plopped it in a different era and it still works. To me that shows the timeless nature of Shakespeare's stories--the truths of human nature endure no matter when they are set. (Just FYI that's what I also loved about Romeo+Juliet - they stuck it in Mexico (?) with jeweled guns, but the emotions of the story were still true). Why not watch them both and have your 12th grader do a compare/contrast between the two movies and the written play? That would be a great assignment!

Literature with changing narrators?
SwimmerMom replied to PariSarah's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I just finished a book that was written in 3rd person that changed point-of-view every single chapter. It was very confusing at first, but I soldiered on and really enjoyed the book. You only get "in the head" of whoever's story you are reading in that chapter, even if you've been "in the head" of someone they are interacting with previously, you don't get to see what that character is thinking. Does that make any sense? Anyhoo, the book is "A Game of Thrones" by George R. R. Martin. He's acclaimed as being "American's Tolkien". His books are definitely in the fantasy genre. -
No bad experience here! Bean absolutely loves Uncle Buck and had her best math year ever with their Pre-Algebra last year. She's looking forward to starting Algebra soon.

Thinking Through Grammar

This looks great! I have emailed them to find out about getting the Answer Key. With 78 Chapters, that would come out to about 3 lessons/week, right? -

Anyone not like Apologia General Science?
SwimmerMom replied to summer's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I have heard that a lot of people don't like General Science. My dd didn't like it, but I told her to soldier on because everyone says all the other Apologia sciences are MUCH better. General Science is all about laying the foundation for how to do things in later sciences. Even Dr. Wile admits it's pretty dry compared to the rest of his curriculum. :) -
