Civil War reading

I was looking for some fiction/non-fiction reading for my daughter as we cover the Civil War.

 

I was looking for something interesting, but not so deep that it will take her forever to read.

 

Any ideas?

Ds. liked "Killer Angels" by Michael Shaara and "The Battle Cry for Freedom : The Civil War Era by James McPherson ( he loved this one).

We liked "The Slopes of War"...a Novel of Gettysburg by N. A. Perez recommended by Sonlight

I second Killer Angels by Shaara. Well-written and from both Northern and Southern perspectives. Even this non-warrior appreciated the insight into some of the major generals as well as the battle formations and movement. One of my favorite reads. There are others that Shaara's son wrote completing a trilogy, and this reminds me to put them on my reading list!

For an afternoon's fun, Stonewall Hinkleman & the Battle of Bull Run. It's a kid's book, but does give an overview of the battle.

 

For the lingering effects of the war, Confederates in the Attic by Tony Horwitz

The Blue and the Gray series by Joseph Altsheler is excellent. It is a series of eight books. The two main characters are cousins, one who fights for the Confederacy and one who for the Union. The books alternate between the cousins.
