How do you all pronounce wh and where are you from?

Recommended Posts

/wh/, just the way the phonics books say it.

I'm from southeastern Virginia, with 30 years in California.

"Watt" and "what" sound completely different to me, and I say them differently.

For me, the difference between "watt" and "what" is in the vowel, not the w/wh. "Watt" has an "ah" sound, while "what" has a short u/schwa sound.

I don't distinguish between the wh/w sounds. I grew up pretty much all over the US--Texas, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, NC, Minnesota (which probably shouldn't count, since I left when I was only 4mo old), and have parents from Ohio and Missouri.

Must have missed this thread first time around.

There is an ever so slight difference between wh and w for me, but not a hw.

ETA: Ooo! Gotta love search engines - I found the quiz! It's here.

I just took it again for jollies (just 13 questions, it's quick!), and here's my quite consistent result: :D

You definitely have a Boston accent, even if you think you don't. Of course, that doesn't mean you are from the Boston area, you may also be from New Hampshire or Maine

It said I'm from Philly.

Of all the places I've lived I've never lived in Philly or the surrounding area in my life.

I say those differently as well, but it's the vowel sound not the /wh/ sound.

There is no difference between /wh/ and /w/ in our area.

This is SUCH an argument at our house. Dh insists that the h isn't silent in whale, what, etc. I insists that it is! I keep telling him that it is just that weirdo school he went to (his mother says the same thing...she went to the same school ) This actually is debated at least once a week here :glare: FWIW most of the kids side with me.
