dirty ethel rackham
I am looking for a good high school biology text. I would like something rigorous (not dummed down), but accessible to a somewhat advanced 8th grader. I am hoping to get the labs in with an adjunct professor at a local community college, who has done this type of thing for us in the past. Any suggestions? Mandy in TN
Middle ds used Holt Biology: Visualizing Life. I worked for him. He found many of the pictures humorous, but I don't think they were intended to be. HTH- Mandy
Matryoshka
One book I've seen highly recommended here, and to confirm is also used and recommended by my brother (a high school biology teacher, and a very good one if I say so myself :)) is Biology, Exploring Life by Campbell et. al. (colloquially known as "Baby Campbell"). Baby Campbell (ISBN 0-13-062592-2) is usually used for 9th grade Biology, so I'm guessing would be quite usable by an advanced 8th grader. I actually have a copy here I borrowed from my brother and I really like it. Not to be confused with Daddy Campbell which is used for an 11th or 12th grade AP course. Kareni
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll have to take a look at these. I wonder if I can ILL them to look them over. Another possibility is to use WorldCat to see what libraries carry a given book. (You'll need to enter your zipcode.) It's possible that a nearby library might have a title of interest.
