alysee
I don't love any of the options. Oak Meadow, Essentials in Literature, Brave Writer, Lightning Literature. Brave Writer has modern books but doesnt feel like what I want. I want modern books but a rigorous literature study. This is a kid who likes books and reading and is leaning towards university. ScoutTN
Do you have particular books in mind? Does your student? Can your student already write a literary analysis essay? DIY. Why not just choose books, read, and discuss? Work on writing as needed, lit related or not. By modern do you mean contemporary or 20th/21st C? Or just anything post medieval/renaissance? What has your student already read? Are you wanting only novels or also short stories, plays, and poetry?
HomeAgain
Have you considered Moving Beyond The Page? They have a single year high school study. Not my favorite books, but they are modern. https://www.movingbeyondthepage.com/purchase/sku-detail/2113/high-school-1-full-year-language-arts-package/ Edited March 24 by HomeAgain
SilverMoon
Tried poking around Teachers Pay Teachers? Either for full lit years or individual titles. It's like Etsy for educational materials, so do check out the reviews and most sellers offer small freebies so you can get a feel for quality. I can usually find individual guides for modern titles there easier than anywhere else.
SilverMoon
Fwiw, I pulled in a basic Holt McDougal literature textbook this year and it doesn't suck. 🤷♀️ It's definitely secular and has far more lessons than we'd ever get through in a year, but it's not like I ever finished one when I was in school. 😄 But it has all the little things like poetry, speeches, short stories, etc that I might overlook, there were even Own Voices stories for minorities, and most of the correlated writing assignments were solid and worthwhile. I've added more modern/diverse authors on the side and cherry picked sections from the textbook. It's kept me on track and my 10th grader has had a solid year. 🙂 Edited March 24 by SilverMoon
