alisha
My 7th grader is completing the book by Critical Thinking Company "Balance Math Teaches Algebra". Basically, it's shapes on a balance scale and you have to find the algebraic equation. For instance, 1 hexagon and 3 circles balances with 180 + 1 hexagon AND 3 squares balances with 2 circles AND a triangle (half a square) balances with ?. You have to find the ?. My 10th grader, who is currently beginning Mr D's Algebra 2, fondly remembers doing those and is asking for some. However, there is only the one book at the CTC, which he's already completed and is a tad below his level now. Does anyone know of any fun algebra puzzles I can check into for this interest? Thanks! ETA: Looking for a quick, fun supplement not a whole curriculum, just to clear up any confusion. Edited September 15, 2022 by alisha
Brittany1116
There are some algebra circuits on TPT but they aren't more than 15 minutes of work each. CTC also has 3 levels of Balance Math and More, but those may also be below his level. Following for more recs.
Malam
What's the appeal of the shapes over letters? You could try https://www.solvemoji.com/ - here's one of their hardest problems. Honestly, writing them algebraically makes it easier for me but whatever floats his boat. Edited September 15, 2022 by Malam
smfmommy
DragonBox Algebra is like that but an app. CTC has a whole series called Balance Benders that sounds similar to what you are describing. https://www.criticalthinking.com/balance-benders.html
