moreschoolplease
Does anyone have guidance on choosing among these options? We're secular if it's relevant: Burgess Bird Book and Burgess Animal Book "Among the ... people" series by Clara Dillingham Pierson The Secret of the Woods by William Long Thanks for any help figuring out which to buy. wendyroo
My kids were 2, 4, 6 and 8 when we went on a road trip and drove for about 48 hours over the course of three weeks. They lived on audiobooks of Thornton Burgess's "The Adventures of..." series. We had a DVD player in the car, so watching videos was an option, but unanimously they opted to listen to Burgess stories instead.
desertflower
I like the adventures series that Wendy mentioned. I like the among …… people series. I never read your third option. the burgess bird series, although, interesting, it was a bit boring. I’m not even going to read it to my youngest. HomeAgain
We very much enjoyed Burgess' books, but part of that is that he is a local author. He made the area come alive when we moved here and several of the books have a fond place in our hearts. My now-12yo won't get rid of his collection even though he is way past the age for them. ktgrok
The Burgess Bird Book was our absolute favorite read aloud EVER!!! We put up a bird feeder outside the window, got some identification books for local birds, and would watch youtube videos about whatever bird we learned about in the book. It was AWESOME. (there is ONE chapter that was a bit upsetting - we skipped it for my younger son who is sensitive - I think it was called "the theif" and was about a bird killing another bird's babies to take over the nest. Otherwise it was a great fit for all my kids from prek-5th.
EssTreeB
I am pretty sure you can get the first two options as free ebooks because they are in the public domain. Our boys really enjoyed all Burgess animal and bird books. I preferred Clara Dillingham Pierson books, there is a sweetness to her stories, and my kids liked them too. I highly recommend searching Librivox recordings (free app of public domain audiobooks). Our favorite readers were Jude Somers and John Lieder. My kids listened to the stories constantly when they were younger.
