omishev
Has anyone built a prefab? I am curious about ballpark cost to see if it is even worth meeting with a builder. Any other thoughts on the process would be helpful too, thanks!
rebcoola
My parents had a prefab built in Wyoming when they lived their it was only a little cheaper. The advantage was how fast they were able to get it up. It was great and sold easily when they moved.
Katy
As a caution you might not think of, prefab homes aren't allowed by many corporate relocation companies, so we don't buy them. There's lists of other surprising things but the other one that has prevented us from looking at homes is concrete siding of any kind (hardeeboard, stucco, that pretty cement-based faux stone siding). Apparently it leads to moisture issues and mold. As well as tons of things that have been banned for being unsafe or out of code. The people who move the most are often families like ours who do so due to corporate relocations. Not sticking to those "rules" will cut out 30% of buyers in many areas. If you're building to stay forever that's one thing. But if there's any chance you want to move in the future I would go with traditional built.
