regentrude
When does a student who will start college in January 2019 fill out the FAFSA? Is the old FAFSA still accessible, or must she wait until October to do the one for the 2019-20 academic year?

This one would have been available in October 2017. I think it uses 2016 tax year (ie, the return typically filed in April 2017) Hard copy. https://fafsa.ed.gov/fotw1819/pdf/PdfFafsa18-19.pdf Online. https://fafsa.ed.gov/index.htm

So it's just the *schools* that want the FAFSA by February, but the actual FAFSA is still available after that date?

Right, that's the one to fill out for any classes that will be taken during the 2018-2019 school year, and then they should fill out another one in October for the 2019-2020 school year.
Lanny
My understanding is that they always have two (2) versions available. One for the current school year and the one for the next school year should be on their web site on 01 October 2018.
Penguin
My DS filled out the 2017-2018 version in December 2017. It was for classes of the 2017-2018 year. No problem at all. Edited July 31, 2018 by Penguin
