mom@shiloh
I'd like to pull together an American Lit. course for my 11th grader. I have a few ideas, but I'd love some suggestions. Are there some American authors or poets who you'd consider essential?
Ethel Mertz
I'd split it into lit before 1860 and then after 1860. Here are some suggestions off the top of my head, in no particular order. Henry David Thoreau, Emily Dickinson, Ralph Waldo Emerson, James Baldwin, Frederick Douglas, Margaret Mitchell, Zora Neale Hurston, Maya Angelou, Mary Oliver, Sanora Babb, Flannery O'Connor, William Faulkner, Eudora Welty, John Steinbeck, Willa Cather, Walker Percy, Annie Dillard. You might also look at the Norton Anthologies for poets and novelists.
klmama
Are you just wanting major works, or do you want poetry and short stories, too? This Prentice Hall American lit text is excellent for poetry, short stories, speeches, letters, and background info.
