Danestress
My father is newly installed in an assisted living apartnment. He has dementia and is not a great reader. However, he does like to sort of sit and read short articles even though he doesn't retain a lot. He likes something to keep his hands on, I guess. I want to get a magazine for him. He's not that interested in the news anymore, and besides, my Mom will bring him Newsweek and Time. I'm afraid to get a car magazine because he can't drive anymore, though cars were really his passion. He was never a big outdoorsman and wasn't tremendously interested in sports, and besides, I afraid that a huge focus on how strong and young other men still are will depress him. I want to get him something visually interesting and guying, but maybe something with a variety of subjects. Maybe a really basic science magazine? or something about technology that isn't geared to advanced readers?

National Geographic probably doesn't cover as wide a range but has even better photos. Reader's digest fits the short and easy category, but is short on visuals. Cricket
I've seen Reminisce magazine. It has reader's stories and memories and pictures from the 20s to the 50s. One of my great-uncles had Alzheimer's but he still could remember a lot of his early life.
missplacedalaskan
My dad loves Readers Digest magazine. He has been getting a subscription for a few years and looks forward to receiving it. I think one of the things that appeals to him is the variety of stories, some fact & fiction. He also likes the bits of humor.

Chelle in MO
My mom (early 70s) likes The Saturday Evening Post. I don't know anything about it, though. Just thought I'd throw the idea in the ring! Chelle
Sparkle
He might like Capper's magazine. Another nice magazine is Birds and Blooms. The pictures alone are worth the price of the magazine.
texascamps
Reminisce. I give this as a gift to all adults in our extended family. Old and young. He'll enjoy it.
6packofun
Thanks for the suggestions from me, too! I've been looking to find something for my dh's grandmother who has Alzheimer's and now lives with us. I ordered Reminisce and am thinking about some of the others as well. Thanks!
