Secular homeschool groups in Gainesville, FL

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Unless you frequent the Chat Board you probably don't know me, but I've been here for many years and was on the old board. My cousin's daughter is thinking of homeschooling and asked me for hs info as well as info for groups in Gainesville. I live 3 hours away and don't know anything about groups in the area. I can help her with the legal info, but not the social/co-op stuff. They aren't religious.

Does anyone know what's available in that area (I don't know exactly where in Gainesville they live but I can find out)? You can post here or PM me.

Thanks. I'm going to cross post to the Chat board too.

I am new here (just joined less than an hour ago), but I wanted to suggest that your family member go online and do a search for home school groups in her area. Perhaps some have contact information and/or websites. Once she finds a few, she could contact them and see if they have any "membership requirements" in term of religious belief.

Some home school groups just meet socially (one I belong to meets once per month for moms-only and we talk and eat...and it's marvelous.), but still do talk about school stuff and education. DH actually found it for me when he searched for home school groups in our area - it was mentioned on someone's blog - very much a fluke that we found it.

Good luck!

https://www.meetup.com/Gainesville-Homeschool-Cooperative/ - this one is not as active as it used to be, but good for finding park days to meet others

http://homeschool-helpdesk.com - this is a local homeschool information board that is kept current

There is also a very active secular homeschool group in Alachua, FL (the town north of Gainesville) I don't have the link handy, but it is probably available somewhere on the Homeschool Helpdesk website.

ETA: There is also an active secular homeschooling Facebook page - I think it is called Gainesville Area Homeschoolers.
