Homeschool Fun

Recommended Posts

Well I think I'm done with my curriculum choices for next year. I stressed over every detail of everything. I think I'm done.

Now I would like to hear everyone's favorite things they do for fun. Things like board games that are fun and educational. Feel free to suggest anything not just games. My oldest is 5 and going into first next year. All suggestions are appreciated.

My kids like an exercise game called Fitivities. I have one that really likes puzzles and coloring books and another that really likes Play-Doh. Both kids like any kind of block...whether it's Cuisenaire rods, Legos (or in your case maybe Duplo), dominos, classic wooden blocks.

Is this the kind of thing you are looking for or do you mean even fun activities outside of the house like soccer, tball, martial arts?

My second son is going into first as well (he is turning 6 next week).

He likes:

Lego, Lego, Lego...I cannot emphasize enough how much time he spends on Lego.  Snap Circuits, drawing along with Art for Kids Hub, Dragon Box apps, Sleeping Queens, Dragonwood, Origami, Rush Hour Jr. and other one player puzzle games, sticker books, Mind Bender and other logic puzzles, Code.org, and plenty of time reading twaddle like Angry Birds and Plants vs. Zombies books.

MyLife I cant figure out how to quote you on my phone, but yes this is the kind of things I mean. We do tball and library group and are joining scouts next year and thats plenty of out of the house stuff for us. We like our time spent at home best. I'll be sure to check out the exercise game. We need something for winter because my second son flat out HATES playing outside in the cold and my oldest wont go outside without me.

My son (also 5 going into 1st) can spend hours with magnatiles on the light table. Look up diy light tables on Pinterest. He played with them before the light table but since the light table... hours and hours of building and creating.

His other favorites are his bike and scooter, an outdoor mud pie kitchen, a water/sand table, and documentaries. Seriously, this kid loves them. We watched one on a topic of his interest (the Titanic) and since then, we probably watch 2 or 3 a week. We've covered Planet Earth, Life, Blue Planet, the Wild series, India's Lost Worlds, Babies, Nine Months that Made You, and many more. There is lots of pausing and discussion to make sure he is engaged and actually learning.

He also loves The Great British Baking Show and we make one of the desserts featured in that week's episode. He has made scones, biscotti, Black Forest Cake, carrot cake, croque madames, pots de creme, trifle, and more.

I love this age. So much fun to be had!

My seven year old likes Kids' Baking Championship and wants to cook, so that's something we are going to start adding in.
