Jeez. If the patch for this security vulnerability was released in March, why the heck are there people who still haven't installed it?

Because people are people? And we do a lot of things that we know are bad for us and fail to do lots of things that we know are good?

A lot of the computers are running complex internally written software that an upgrade would render useless. The software has to be completely rewritten to work with the new operating system. That can cost big bucks, so they continue running it on old operating systems and don't upgrade.

I know right? Keep up with your updates people! With the hospitals, though, the issue was that their proprietary software has to be tested with an update before it is deployed and that means it can be quite a delay. Still - let this be a lesson on installing updates.

But especially with hospitals that deal with sensitive data, one would hope they keep a secure data backup and can restore data lost to ransom demands.

They must have some way to patch these gaping security holes, though.

They usually do, but that doesn't mean they can access it in the middle of the terminals being locked down, as was the issue yesterday, and they cannot protect the sensitive data that is copied even if they have second working backups. It's fixable by design, but not by behavior, alone.
