PeppermintPattie
I don't mean travel books, like Rick Steves, but maybe some mysteries or other fiction. I know so little about England and think a few novels might help. I can take non-fiction in quick, to-the-point doses, so I'd be happy to hear those suggestions, too. lailasmum
Rivers of London by Ben Aaranovitch. There are a lot of other books in the series.
Laura Corin
For a picture of one street in London, you might try Capital by John Lanchester. It's not a perfect novel but it's up to date and interesting.
MelAR05
I know it's non-fiction, but I am currently reading Bill Bryson's The Road to Little Dribbling. This is my first Bryson book and I am really enjoying it. After I finish reading in the evening, I have to google the town/location I was just reading about because it sounds so amazing. :)
Mothersweets
Seconding the Little Dribbling book! Bill Bryson's book are always a good read. He's funny and charming and you end up learning about a place or person in short, fascinating anecdotes.
