mamashark
I've been searching for a while and can't find what I'm looking for. I want a general music curriculum that teaches basic music theory (rhythm, note values, etc.) through the introduction of various songs and introduces basic musical genres and music history. General music, rather than specific to classical composers or individual instruments. Does this exist??
2_girls_mommy
For little kids I used Rod and Staff's music workbooks for some beginning theory along with the What Your X Grader Needs to Know music sections as an outline of what to study each year. So we would read a section, do any activities it suggested, pick up books and videos and Cds at the library on the subjects (orchestra, instruments, composers, types of music, etc.) and enjoy them. We learned the songs in the WYXGNTK using WeeSings CDs as most are on one of them. Now there is YouTube and each song could probably easily be found online. HomeAgain
Maybe something like Calvert's Discoveries In Music? http://www.rainbowresource.com/product/sku/014454
Ruthie in MS
There are some workbooks out there called Theory Time. They are for each grade level. Our violin teacher recommended them and we're learning a lot. They are a bit on the cheesy side but not too bad. Oh, and they also teach piano basics. It's basically what I was looking for although I'm not thrilled with the video component.
