hholzer
I am in desperate need of book suggestions for my 11th grade English class. I need a book that is non-fiction, has a theme of the American Dream, and is appropriate for 16-17 year olds. The book we thought we had didn't end up working out, so now we only have a few days to find a good one. Help!!
3andme
Perhaps Boys in the Boat. While not a typical "American Dream" book focusing on the socioeconomic rise of it's protagonists, it is an inspirational non-fiction book that focuses on the dream of Olympic success but could also provide some commentary on the American dream as seen through the struggles and successes of the athletes. 3andme
Perhaps one of these memoirs - Angela's Ashes or October Sky.
Sebastian (a lady)
I love October Sky. I was thinking of A Mighty Long Way, which is the memoir of one of the Little Rock Nine. I don't know if it fits within American Dream, but it covers their desire for an education.
Sebastian (a lady)
I remember Colin Powell and Norman Schwarzkopf's biography fondly.
Matryoshka
I just finished The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration. Very good and definitely about people trying to pursue the American Dream.
Amy in KS
Hidden Figures... if they haven't all already seen the movie!
Amy in KS
The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind is phenomenal as well, though not strictly American.
