A question for runners who live in colder climates...

Recommended Posts

Fall has finally hit here in NJ...it is downright COLD!! I have finally gotten into a decent routine with Cto 5K and would hope to continue into the colder months but I must admit, I am losing motivation. I know I'll warm up once I get moving but just getting started in the wee morning or early evening hours will be a hurdle.

What is your secret?

Do you wear expensive compression garments/fleece/coat?

Any suggestions?? I'm looking to get some ideas now so I can make a wise purchase and help myself not lose ground.

I look forward to gleaning from you experienced exercisers!!;)

Blessings,kathi

A wicking shirt under fleece and some sort of wicking pant/tights are my cold weather gear (oh and gloves and an ear wrap).

The thing that motivates me to get out the door when it is cold is the fact that you burn 12% more calories running in the cold than you do in warm weather. :D

I never knew that before!!! THanks for the added motivation:001_smile: So where do you purchase the shirt/pants from?? Any recommendations?

Thanks!

I'm not in as cold a climate as you :) but in the winter I like to wear a sweatshirt and shorts, gloves and a hat - my legs warm up very quickly and I would get hot too fast if I wore leggings. Sometimes I end up taking off the gloves but never the hat so as not to lose heat that way.

For me the hardest step is the first one out the door, regardless of the weather :) Once my feet hit the pavement I'm loving it.

Make sure you cover your mouth when you run so the air you're breathing is warmer. Like wrap a scarf around your head when it is really cold. And in NJ it won't be that bad (I grew up in CT). I play outside year round here in Minnesota, we're talking running on ice in 20 below (broomball). It is key to keep your face covered and keep moving!
