Just Kate
Dd (age 9) got her ears pierced a little over 6 weeks ago. So far, they are doing good and she is looking forward to taking the piercing earrings out and changing them to a new pair. I want to be careful to only purchase earrings that won't irritate her ears, but I'm not sure what I'm looking for. Nickel-free is best, right? What else? How do I know what type of earrings are nickel-free (does it say on the package)? Thanks!
J-rap
We've had good luck with 14K gold. But we're lazy, and usually get those little "endless" hoops that stay in all the time.
Monica_in_Switzerland
I second gold. My ears majorly reacted to everything else when I had mine pierced as a kid! Ouch!
JoJosMom
When DD had her ears pierced we had it done at her pediatrician's office. They used medical plastic earrings and recommend the use of medical plastic for the first year (it takes that long to fully heal.) Their reason was that use of medical plastic initially GREATLY reduces the risk of developing allergies in the long-term.

JoJosMom
Interesting! I haven't heard this before! Here's a link to the company whose products the doctor uses (And from whom we have purchased earrings. We're past a year now, but we haven't added to the collection yet.)
The Governess
We used gold only for the first year, then added in sterling silver after that. Any other metals still irritate her ears 2 years later.
