Just Kate
So, I'm very excited that I've been invited to a "girls' night out" tomorrow night. We are going to dinner and then to one of those pottery painting places. I've taken my kids to paint pottery a few times, but being the extremely NOT creative person that I am, I haven't painted. I want to join in but I need some ideas. What could I paint that isn't too complicated but will turn out nice? I've ried googling but everything I see is WAY above my painting level! Carol in Cal.
You could paint the piece a pretty base color, and then use stamps in a contrasting color to add a repeating design. I did that with red strawberries over a light blue background and ended up with a really cute mug.
Hammfried
You can use lace as a stencil. Paint a base color down, apply the lace, and then sponge paint a contrasting color on top of the lace. When you remove the lace, you get an intricate pattern without having to actually have drawn yourself. Sponge painting is manageable too if wine is involved during painting. ;) You can use any stencil the studio has, it doesn't have to be lace either. Some instructions using lace: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=360965.0 Happy pottery painting! :)
Arcadia
Angry Bird icon is rather forgiving despite what a bad painter I am. My kids painted their pottery class mugs bright orange and bright yellow. I use their mugs as vases for my dried flowers.
