raganfamily
Anyone have experience with either IEW A Guide to Writing Your Novel or Novel in One Year? My ds wants to be a writer and I want to have something along those lines this school year. I am ok with creating and piecing together a curriculum plan for him. However, these two products looked good. I am wanting him to do more creative writing and journalism this year. Any reviews or other suggestions for these? Mosaicmind
Don't know about IEW but have you looked at The One Year Adventure Novel or Cover Story? I do write and my boys want to write so I've been looking at both of these. I think we will do them either this year or next.
Mom22ns
I've used the One Year Adventure Novel and their follow up Other Worlds and highly recommend them. I haven't used either of those you mention.
J-rap
One of my daughters used Learn to Write the Novel Way, so it's not one of the programs you're talking about. But, we both thought it moved too slowly. At least for her. It had a lot of great ideas in it, but her enthusiasm for her actual novel started waning with all the slow, detailed steps. Years later, another daughter wanted to write a novel, so I just said, okay, write it. And we built time into our day for it, daily. Her enthusiasm kept up all year. We also watched lots of good movies and documentaries that took place during the period of time and in the same part of the world as her story. I'd sit down and work with her from time to time of course, and she did have some work on character description, parts of story, etc. from other years. Anyway, just a thought! It could just be a difference in personalities. The older one moved on to other expressions of art, whereas the younger one still loves to write. The One Year Adventure Novel looks fun! SilverMoon
DD/11th gives OYAN two very hearty thumbs up and wants to do the second set this coming year. We considered both you mentioned until a great deal on a used OYAN fell in my lap. We had decided on Learn to Write the Novel Way based on samples before that happened. Adventures in Fantasy by Gust and Sieze the Story by Hanley are others we looked at. If you want something simpler the free NaNoWriMo workbooks have some great planning pages.
