Jean in Newcastle
Ds18 has asked to learn some music theory. This won't necessarily get on his transcript. He's a guitarist and thinks that some music theory will help him to improve in guitar. Any suggestions for books, apps, classes etc? I was a music major for a time but I am a vocalist and we aren't exactly known for our music theory prowess ;) (though I do know the basics). Rockhopper
I remember looking at a music theory course on homeschool buyer's co-op a year or so ago. I can't remember if it was DVD or internet? But it looked good. IIRC, I passed on it because it seemed aimed at teens/older students, and I was looking for something very simple for an elementary-aged kid.
klmama
www.musictheory.net has a lot of good lessons and exercises. There are exercises specifically for guitar fretboard note, interval, and chord identification, as well as lessons in standard musical notation and keyboards.
dhudson
My kids are doing the Intermediate Music Theory class from WTMA and are enjoying it. I am a vocalist, as well, so I made them have 8+ years of piano to make up for my lack of theory. It's amazing what I didn't know, all I had to do was sing it.
