Need costume idea for me

I volunteer (not nearly enough) at our church who will be hosting a special event where volunteers are recognized.  We are to dress up in costume (not mandatory).  Our church doesn't participate in Halloween so costumes should not reflect that observance.

It's been a sad and emotional time for me these last few weeks and I thought it might be fun for me to go.

Do you have any ideas on costumes?  While I know a "little" of the fundamentals of sewing, I'm not a seamstress.  I'd like to use whatever accessories I have in my house but am willing to buy cheap at Dollar Tree or Party City, etc.

What ideas do you have?

Cat in the Hat is easy.  You buy the hat (or the headband if you don't tolerate hats well -- that's me) and the bow tie.  Wear a black shirt.

Ooh, Party City has a $20 kit.  It comes with white cartoon hands, too.

And, the costume ideas are great!   Thanks.

I don't know why costumes were chosen but recall they are not to be Halloween in nature.  Also, no one needs to feel obligated to dress in costume.  It's just something different.

kewb,  the sociopath idea - smirkish smile.

perky bunch,  the cat in a hat idea is great as well. cute and cheap.

thanks.

Oh,so you are saying maybe it is to have the fun of costumes at Halloween but not scary Halloween costumes?

Just wondering.

I dressed as Mother Nature last year--flowy green and blue top (like the earth--I'm certainly round enough!) with small stuffies pinned to my shoulders and shirt, and a flower wreath.

Could you do a cupcake? Lampshade upside down (put your legs thru the top) or just posterboard you fold back and forth and then open and put around you like a cupcake liner. Stuff it with tissue paper for the frosting and add some sparkles on top.

Another cute costume for church (can you tell I've done this?) is Where's Waldo.  You get a red and white striped shirt (I bought a nice cotton rugby off Amazon, but there are tons of red and white striped shirts around), and wear it with jeans (or jeans shorts).  Find a Waldo cap or hat.  I own this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Wheres-Peeking-Striped-Trucker-Baseball/dp/B00ET98L22/ref=sr_1_28?ie=UTF8&qid=1442692712&sr=8-28&keywords=waldo+hat

but this one is cute:

and so is this one (and it's on sale!):

Peruvian hats lend themselves to costumes.  Party City carries a bunch, for about $10 each.

Olaf, Minnie Mouse (this is a "laplander" hat), Minion would all be good for church and easy to pair with clothes that would work.
