StartingOver
Hopefully someone might be able to help. Any one adopt a child or an adoptee from Alabama? My hubby just sent for his Birth Certificate, and yes we knew he was adopted through a family adoption. But what we received was a Certificate of Adoption? He was adopted in 1963, was this the norm, or should there be an amended Birth Certificate?
ondreeuh
When I was adopted (step-parent adoption) I was given the choice of having my birth certificate amended. I didn't want that, so I have my original birth certificate and a certificate of adoption. When my daughter was adopted (also a step-parent adoption), our lawyer requested an amended birth certificate as part of the paperwork that was done on that day. So my daughter has both. I wasn't in AL, but I assume many states give you the choice of amending the BC and it is not done automatically.
StartingOver
Goodness. Now we have to try to find the BC, in that we have no idea what his birth mom put on it? His parents were married, but she left his dad. His dad didn't know he had another son until hubby was 40. What a mess. Hopefully they can give me some clues when I call.
StartingOver
Mystery solved !! It is very likely that no one ever requested his Birth Certificate, so none was ever manually typed up back then. Now computers do that for them. So they will be having a meeting to explain this procedure if they every come across it again, as sending this document out shouldn't have happened and would have outed his adoption. OOPS !! He has known his whole life, so I assured them that wasn't an issue. We will be sending back the certificates, they will amend them to read Certificate of Birth. At the same time we will request his original file for genealogy purposes. We are both very curious to see what is in there could be tons or very little, because there are only family stories.
Spryte
Glad you solved it, and glad he already knew about the adoption! Close call for that office. :) Hoping you get some interesting new info.
StartingOver
Yes, whew! Could have been a shock for someone else. Mostly we are curious about his birth name and how it was changed. :-) His mother was completely deaf. So we totally understand that in those times it was a logical reason to remove him especially when she wasn't with her husband, she was around a lot. Thank goodness times have changed.
Tap
I wish that original birth certificates were retained and that there was a legal guardianship/adption certificate issued at a future date. To me, a birth certificate, should reflect the biological parents and not the legal ones.
