elmerRex
Is there a way to figure out what a 1st grade reader would or should sound like if they are reading on level? I am ESOL and I can not judge what he should be sounding like well.

go_go_gadget
It would depend on the material being read. I'd have different expectations of a student reading phonetically-controlled books than I would of a student reading Frog and Toad, for instance, because the latter offers greater resistance. Either way, I wouldn't be phased by a slow, halting oral reading by a first grader.
Beaniemom
In California, the benchmark is a fluency of 60 words per minute when reading grade level appropriate material. Take that for what you will. I have a hard time grasping what a first grade reader should sound like and I have one. My dd8 was reading chapter books easily but my son is a halting reader.

They seem normal but very different than what was expected from our public school.
Arcadia
Are you worried about accent or fluency? There is a big range to fluency in 1st grade in schools. I wonder when these are from? They seem normal but very different than what was expected from our public school.
