Daria
My 15 year old is very interested in Ancient Egypt. Right now he's working his way through a TC course on the subject, and he's fascinated, but at this point it just something he does for fun. If we wanted to take that interest and turn it into a history course that could go on his transcript, what would we need to do? Are there guidelines for how much he'd need to read, and how much written work he'd need to produce?
elegantlion
You might search through the sticky at the top of this forum. Generally, a credit is calculated by hours. 120 hours for one credit is an average, so around 60 for half a credit. To make it a credit academically, you would need to some way to evaluate the work, either essays, traditional tests, discussions, projects, or any combination of those. If you have the course guide for the lectures, you can use those for questions and also to find additional resources. One lecture series is not really enough to give credit, but Ancient Egypt is a subject that could easily be expanded. Then there is always the option to just leave it as an interest and not count it toward school. When my son is deeply into something that could be a credit, we discuss it and I give him the option. Last thing I want to do is kill his love of learning something by turning it into something other than he intended it to be.
Sunshine State Sue
I would agree with EL. Lori D's post #17 in this thread explains Carnegie credits. In addition, there are many ways for a student to demonstrate their knowledge. I'll post a list separately.
