Question for Scout Moms

Where can we find an affordable flag and pole for our Girl Scout Troop meetings? We have younger girls, so we can't do anything very tall, but we want something with a stand, not a desk-sized flag. Our council office wants $62 for one, and we'd like to find something cheaper than that if we could. Unfortunately, the church where we meet will not allow us to mount any brackets on the wall, so we need a stand. It needs to be portable, because we can't leave it in the meeting area.

 

I wish we could find an organization that might donate one to us, but I don't know of any.

We use a piece of pipe from the hardware store and a thick piece of wood that the kids drilled out and sanded on their own.

You can build anything with PVC pipe :-). It's like tinker-toys for adults. I've seen PVC mounted in a 5 gallon bucket used as a flag stand for scouts.

That is not a bad idea at all! It would make breakdown and transport very easy!

Our troop was able to borrow one for ceremonies until we got one, which is a pain because someone has to pick up and return, but it's cheap.  See if you can split the cost with another troop, or borrow from another troop.  Alternatively, K-Mart has a modest sized one flag and pole set ($15) and you could ask a parent to build a wooden stand for it.
