pjssully
I have one more question. I need a good literature book for the Civil War years for an 11th grade girl. She is bright and has a good load so it can't be really long. I want to give her a different angle on the Civil War since she is reading lots of text book like accounts. I would love the best ones that you have read!! pj

Sebastian (a lady)
Uncle Tom's Cabin The life of Frederick Douglass Ruth in NZ These are great. Red Badge of Courage is a standard for the Civil War even though it was written by someone who was born too late to be in the war. I think even some of Uncle Tom's Cabin is worth doing. A great antidote for those who would justify slavery in one way or another.
Karen in CO
You might try Octavia Butler's Kindred. It is a science fiction book that takes a modern woman and puts her in the antebellum South. It is well done and helps to bring the time to life by contrasting with modern sensibilities. regentrude
I recommend the short stories by Ambrose Bierce.
