Moving to Illinois

Any particular location in the metro Chicago area that's a nice place to live?  Reasonable cost of living please (ie, don't suggest Lake Forest because it's so beautiful there, and the houses aren't  as expensive as Beverly Hills mansions :glare:  so it's reasonable).

He's looking for work right now.  We're thinking of moving there to be closer to family who live in Mt. Prospect.  We need a location with newer (late 80s to present) housing because we have a child in a wheelchair and older houses are harder to adapt due to little closed off rooms, narrow hallways, and narrow bathrooms.

One thing to watch out for is the flooding near the Des Plaines River. It can get really bad sometimes. Another, the area near O'Hare can be loud. Also, commuting can be a bear so you'll want to think that through even if your husband uses Metra instead of driving himself.

Here are a few suburban suggestions off the top of my head:

Palatine

Rolling Meadows

Arlington Heights

Buffalo Grove

Vernon Hills (just west of Lake Forest)

I like redfin.com for checking out real estate. They include things like HOA dues, taxes and sales history.
