FeFe
It looks like the kids and I might be able to accompany my husband on a business trip in October to Pittsburgh. We'll have a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday as a family. Then Monday the kids and I would be on our own while my husband attends a meeting. Our children are 16,13, 9 and 7. Does anyone have any suggestions on things to do? We'll be driving from Indianapolis so it would be possible to make stops along the way, if anyone has ideas. grovegirl
The incline is very neat...and at the bottom there is Station Square for shopping and dining. http://www.stationsquare.com/.......There is the zoo:http://www.pittsburghzoo.org/. There is the Science Center :http://www.carnegiesciencecenter.org/ There is the Natural History Museum which has Dinosaurs/Hall of Gems and Minerals : http://www.carnegiemnh.org/...... There is the southside that also has shopping/dining including a Cheescake Factory. http://www.southsidechamber.org/business_directory/ You can also go on a tour of the three rivers : http://www.gatewayclipper.com/ Hopefully the Pirates will be in the playoffs----so maybe you could catch a game! pittsburgh.pirates.mlb.com/index.jsp?c_id=pit I hope that you have a great visit! Rebel Yell
Does your family like history? Sports? Science? old house tours? Arts? Pittsburgh is my town... I can give more specific ideas based on what you like. Also, are you looking for "free" or "money is no object"? Do you have memberships to any zoos, science centers, etc.? Might have some reciprocal admissions. Also, do you want "uniquely Pittsburgh"? IMO, every city has a great science center.... but not every city has an incline, KWIM? EDITING TO ADD: see my next post for more ideas...

During your visit, "RADical Days" might be going on (depending on when in Oct you'll be here). The list will give you some good ideas for places to see and things to do. http://www.radworkshere.org/interior.php?pageID=64 Now, for food: Gotta go Primanti's. http://primantibros.com/home.html See if you can be an extra in a movie! LOTS of cool films are shot in Pitsburgh! http://pghfilm.org/hotline.jsp?pageId=2161392240601287511677038
northcoast
Try the National Aviary http://www.aviary.org/ When we visited several years ago my kids were able to have quite a few interactions with the birds.
Dahliarw
Your olders might be bored, but their children's museum is FANTASTIC!https://pittsburghkids.org/ If you happen to be on the right side of the city, we LOVE LOVE LOVE Glen's, and they should still be open for frozen custard: http://glenscustard.com/ (Springdale is the original location and the only one we've been to. They have mini golf there too, but I don't know if it's open in October). If your oldest is thinking of colleges, visit the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon (my alma matter), Dusquene, and and many other schools in the area if any are ones that might interest your oldest. I agree with the pps too. We like the Carnegie Museum, Zoo, incline, etc too!
Momof3littles
We were there for a few days this spring and did the Carnegie Science Museum, lots of just general walking around downtown. We couldn't catch a baseball game while we were there, but that would have been fun. The Warhol Museum was closed when we were there but I would have liked to check that out. JessReplanted
We really enjoyed the zoo. The museums are great too - especially the science museum. The children's museum is a lot of fun too - but I really think that it is for younger kids. And, the incline is also fun (and educational). If you are willing to drive a bit (an hour or so) you can get out of the city, go hiking, and maybe see some great fall foliage.
