do you use audio books?
grovegirl replied to bttrflyvld's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I use audiobooks for my eldest a fluency tool. I tend get a copy of the book and have her read along with the audio. If I can't find an audio book from my library, I use the Librivox websit https://librivox.org/ which has free public domain audiobooks. I find the site a little challenging to browse. I find it works best to know the name of the book you are looking for. For example here is the link to a collection of Beatrix Potter stories. https://librivox.org/the-great-big-treasury-of-beatrix-potter-by-beatrix-potter/ -

Funny-Gross Books for Reluctant Reader

My struggling reader loved the My Weird School/My Weirder School series by Dan Gutman. I didn't really like the content, but they were the only books I could get her to read. -
earrings irritate my ears - help! - update page 1
grovegirl replied to HappyLady's topic in The Chat Board
My dd10 can only wear Surgical Steel or Titanium (like the metal they put in Joint replacement) earrings or her ears get so irritated they bleed. I have to get them online or at craft fairs. Also, we have to use the plastic backs. Here are two links: http://www.amazon.com/Stainless-Surgical-Steel-Earrings-Hypoallergenic/dp/B001W3QV0C http://www.amazon.com/Titanium-Birthstone-Earrings-SWAROVSKI-ELEMENTS/dp/B0041HENMY/ref=pd_sim_bt_4 -
We have had Netflix (streamed through our Wii) for a long time. We just tried a week free of Hulu Plus because we needed to see a couple specific episodes of the TV show Castle. I have to admit that I was quite disappointed with Hulu Plus. The streaming would stop and start and there was frequent errors. I am not sure if these problems were because of streaming through the Wii or because of our Verizon DSL or because of Hulu plus. We never have a problem with Netflix streaming or Amazon Prime streaming.

Does anyone want to talk to me about HS in PA?
grovegirl replied to Runningmom80's topic in The Chat Board
This is my second year homsechooling (in PA) after pulling my kids from Public. I found it very helpful to read the law, print the law and keep reading the law. But, once I started, it is really not a big deal to comply with. My DD10's portfolio last year was a 1 inch binder (not even full). For her "log" i just have an Excell type calender for each semester and a key. For example: A:Easy Grammar 4....and then on each day that we used Easy Grammar I just put the letter "A". I also continue to use the AskPauline site frequently. Also, if you will be in Western PA there is a Homeschool Conference in March in Pittsburgh that you might want to go to. http://snsadams.wix.com/gphwa or there is the CHAP convention in May in Harrisburg http://www.chaponline.com/2013convention/ (which I have never been to) -
Interesting threads that turn into...kilt/bacon/cupcake threads.

Kind of proved my point....I expressed my opinion and it was judged "ridiculous" . -
Interesting threads that turn into...kilt/bacon/cupcake threads.
grovegirl replied to HollyinNNV's topic in The Chat Board
I have wondered if the creation of two seperate boards: the "Chat Board" and the "General Edcuation Discussion Board" hasn't concentrated the type of threads that devolve into cupcakes/bacon....so that it appears like there is more negativity. I have been a long time lurker, and now I find that I am going between the two boards to find the type of information that used to be on the old general board. So this "Chat Board" has only chat type postings.....which are (IMO) more emotional and personal. (and I will slide back into lurking....because quite frankly it is very intimidating to even think about posting or starting a thread) -
Given that a cardiac cause has been ruled out, there are a few different type muscle spasms, trigger points, or thoracic outlet probems that could be causing your symptoms. You could see if a physical therapist or chiropractor would take cash payments and go for an evaluation. It is possible given that you described a somewhat sudden onset, that you have your clavicle rotated or a rib/vertebrate out of place. Or could be a muslce spasm: Here is something I found that kind of sounds like your referral pattern of pain you are describing. http://www.triggerpointtherapist.com/blog/scalene-trigger-points/scalene-scalenus-trigger-points-upper-body-troublemakers/ A lot of times, muscle relaxors or anti-inflammatories need time and steady dosing to be the most effective. Also, sometimes taking extra calcium (like chewing Tums) and drinking lots of extra water can help. The best position for pain relief can be with a small pillow against your side so that you have a slight space between your upper arm and your chest....using ice in this position is helpful.

I usually let my kids decide. Mostly because I wear shorts and not coat almost all year (in Pennsylvania) and I am comfortable! :tongue_smilie: I do, however, gently encourage DD7 on appropriate clothing level because with her sensory issues she wears a tank-top dress and crocks.... even if it is 5 degrees out....and does not seem to feel the cold!
