dancingmama
I was wondering what spelling program you guys would recommend for a 4th grader who seems to pick up spelling easily but still needs something. We've done AAS through 3. Thoughts?
Gizzyntaz
Perhaps Sequential Spelling? I liked that it didn't require a lot of repetition for the natural spellers.
MamaSprout
Perhaps Sequential Spelling? I liked that it didn't require a lot of repetition for the natural spellers. I think there is an adult Sequential Spelling. Logic of English has a free higher level list at her blog. She says if they've mastered that list, they should move onto roots. http://logicofenglish.com/resources/spelling-lists/advanced-spelling-lists
Crimson Wife
Spelling Power? That is what my oldest used before moving on to spelling bee prep with Hexco Academic products.
dancingmama
We tried both Sequential Spelling and Spelling Power and both were too boring. Would LoE be overkill?
Crimson Wife
Spelling is a fairly boring subject so I'm not sure what you can find out there that isn't dull. Scholastic has a workbook entitled "No Boring Practice, Please! Spelling" that is a bit more engaging. However I would consider it a supplement rather than a full program like AAS, LoE, Spelling Power, or Sequential Spelling.
dancingmama
I guess it was that she would just fly through it. She could do a weeks worth of worksheets in an hour if I let her. I wonder if perhaps instead of spelling I should move onto vocabulary instead.
Crimson Wife
When I used Spelling Power with my oldest, I didn't bother with any of the activities but just did the daily tests using the lists. Took about 15 minutes per day and she finished levels G through the end of the book in less than a year.
MamaSprout
We tried both Sequential Spelling and Spelling Power and both were too boring. Would LoE be overkill? LoE wouldn't be overkill if you just used the "advanced spelling lists" without the book, which covers grammar, phonics and writing.
Hakg
We used AAS 1-3 and now Spelling Wisdom - love the simplicity of it.
Gizzyntaz
We tried both Sequential Spelling and Spelling Power and both were too boring. Would LoE be overkill? Yes, we've since dropped Sequential. Mostly because of the strict teacher/student relationship and DS and I tend to be oil and water. It was a source of too many fights. I still think it has great lists for advanced learners, but we've dropped spelling altogether this semester and have switched to Wordly Wise for vocab development. That seems to be working out better for us. I think I am going to use the words as "spelling" words too, but this is only our first week....
