Help me get access to THE filing thread everyone talks about...

Recommended Posts

I've been searching through old threads, looking for inspiration on how to organize for the new year. I keep finding posts that say, "Oh, you must read THE filing thread!" They provide the link, but it won't work! It looks like it is now "owned" by the Large Family Logistics sub-group, which I sadly do not qualify to join! Who can help a sister out and open that thread up so the masses can read those words of wisdom?

It must be the tags on it. I had an issue recently where I tagged one of my own original posts and it ended up in a social group that I couldn't access. I had to edit and remove the tag for it to go on the main board. Really, the tags are almost worthless now, so I wish they'd just get rid of them since they don't work how they did on the old board anyway.

In the meantime, I hope a mod can fix the Filing thread for you.

Well, that is just ...odd.

I will tell you that many people came back that year and said that all that filing they did turned into a logistical nightmare when their weeks started to get "off".

I'm just jealous because I could never be that organized .

I think it worked for some but not others. Naturally. :D I believe the OP in that thread did it so she would have an end date. So she might have missed a math lesson once in a while, but they finished the book. (As opposed to finishing most of the book, therefore missing several lessons at the end.)

In my opinion, the major plus of the filing thread (whether one filed by week or subject) was getting the preparation done ahead of time. I'm thinking about going by subject this time. And I really want to do full preparation for science this year, so that we can get it done. Even though I really like the idea of weekly, so we won't get behind. (School is dragging on this year, mostly my fault. I want an end date next year.)

Thank you all so much! Babynurse11, you're brilliant. :) I didn't think of searching the google cache.

After reading through some of the filing thread, I don't think it will work for me, but I did glean some ideas. Seeing what others do is always helpful. I would love to have a recap post from all those folks to see if they still recommend the methods they proposed back then!

A mod PMed me and said they'll look into it for us. I'm glad someone managed to find the cached pages; I couldn't figure out how to do it.

This. I was on of the ones who was very gung ho on that thread. I bought a million manila and hanging folders, library pockets, crates etc. I spent a ton of time photocopying and organizing and filing and re-filing...and in the end, I ended up with a ton of paper I didn't need, files that didn't reflect where we were on anything, cut workbook pages that were out of order, and finished pages that I didn't know how to organize or store. What I learned was that it really, really benefited me to do the following:

  • Make ALL my copies, book/resource lists, lesson plans, etc. before the year started. Once the year started, I was buried, and I am terrible at winging it.
  • Cut any teacher/student books that were hard to use when bound and three-hole punch them (or spiral bind them, but I like three-ring binders).
  • Give my student a file box to keep her student books/binders in, and keep my teacher books/binders right behind my chair.

I don't regret my filing year, because it was still the most organized year I'd had at that point, and I learned a lot about what really works for myself and my kids. If my kids were younger, maybe it would have been a better effort. But I was also really ready for my oldest to start taking some responsibility for her materials, and I found that filing put it all on me (in my case, anyway).

It's still a great read though!

I filed that year and it was probably one of our most successful years, simply because I knew what we were doing next and had everything needed to accomplish the lesson/activity. But, I only filed certain things - I did not cut up math workbooks or any other workbooks. I did print pages from PDF files and file those by week. So, I had history (maps, coloring pages, narration pages), science (lab sheets, narration pages, "for my notebook" pages from RSO), Latin, narration/dictation pages for WWE exercises, and a weekly "cheat sheet" that gave an overview of the lessons/activities. I've since modified our schooling - we are using less worksheet-based curriculum and more either already bound in a workbook or putting work in composition books. But if our curriculum choices warrented it, I would not hesitate to file again this year. It was a much less stressful year (and I had a baby in the middle of it) than years when I was busy trying to gather materials/pages either on a Sunday evening, or more likely the morning before the lesson.
