momsuz123
I am really trying to figure out what to do for history for 8 year old. I am looking at unique and traditional ways of doing it. One thought I had is that she is my music lover. She hears a Mozart piece, and knows it. Hmmmm...is there a way to learn history through music? Say classical music? Bang!Zoom!
There's an outline that touches this idea in WTM. Combines music & art with history timelines.
GoVanGogh
http://www.professorcarol.com/shop/ Perhaps the above link? I own the American musical heritage DVD but won't be using it until later this year or early next year. I have heard Professor Carol speak and she is wonderful! Her passion for music bubbles over. quark
We simply adored The Story of Classical Music.
Momling
Not classical music, but my kids have learned tons from "horrible histories songs" and "history for music lovers" - search YouTube for videos.
Geo
Beautiful Feet comes to mind. They have a " History of Classical Music". It utilizes the Music Masters series, which would be accessible to an 8yo. Reading level is 4th & up, but mom could easily read aloud more difficult material. Cost can be cut substantially if you buy a used guide, use the library, or buy used literature as you go. Adoremusbooks.com has the cds at the cheapest price. This is all fresh because I'm piecing an art & music history course together for dd's electives. I will not be using BF, just some elements from it. http://bfbooks.com/History-of-Classical-Music-Jumbo-Pack
GoVanGogh
Zeezok Publishing has two music programs - Great Musician Series and their new Music Appreciation: http://www.zeezok.com/ Handle on the Arts also comes to mind: http://www.handleonthearts.com/ We have used two of their products and loved them! They are very well laid out - easy on the teacher, engaging for the child. I used their older sets which included laminated prints.
Walking-Iris
http://harmonyfinearts.org/ HFA comes to mind. These are not history lessons, but they follow a history rotation. Here's the overview chart. http://harmonyfinearts.org/wp-content/uploads/downloads/2012/11/Harmony-Fine-Arts-Overview-Plans-Grades-1-12.pdf
