Is "A Coloring Book of the Middle Ages" really that bad?

Typically, Bellerophon is reproducing actual images from stained glass, tapestries, mosaics, etc. So the crudeness / comic book feel is what a lot of the artwork really looked like back then. If those reviewers on Amazon want actual Medieval art, the Bellerophon and Dover books do a good job of reproducing the art of the times. If those reviewers want detailed, realistic, Alan Lee style artwork coloring books, then they need to look elsewhere.

I will say, the Bellerophon and Dover are lovely, but very intricate for younger colorers -- tiny spaces, intricate designs are hard to color neatly with crayons... The little Dover stained glass books and markers worked well for young elementary ages. BEST of luck, whatever you go with! Warmly, Lori D.

I didn't think the pictures were all that intricate - at least by Bellerophon standards. You might also look at A Medieval Alphabet (also Bellerophon).

Or just get them all. How can anyone live without the Bellerophon paper soldiers for the Hundred Years' War? Or Infamous Women?
