thundersweet
Please recommend what to start with. I suspect my 8yo may be dyslexic. I am talking with someone now and will go for testing in July. What should I start with? Sandy
Heathermomster
Overcoming Dyslexia by Shaywitz.
FairProspects
I vote Dyslexic Advantage. Or better yet, this article from today's NYT.
Lecka
I think they are both good.... I think I would start with Overcoming Dyslexia bc it has more about remediating reading and that is what I wanted to know about first. But I could see another person getting a better perspective with Dyslexic Advantage first. I also have a fondness for the reading rockets website and their video with Henry Winkler. I do also like the Susan Hall/Louisa Moats books, and Phonics A-Z by Wiley Blevins, and the Barton website. I am Facebook friends for the Dyslexia:The Big Picture movie and love watching videos from that, but haven't seen the whole movie.
thundersweet
Thanks so much ladies! Fair, I did enjoy the article. I think I'll get Overcoming Dyslexia first. Those were the two I was contemplating. Sandy
LaughingCat
If I was just starting out and not knowing much about it, I would go with The Mislabled Child. It talks about various issues that can affect reading, not just Dyslexia.
Tokyomarie
I, too, like The Mislabeled Child (Brock and Fernette Eide) as a first read for someone who doesn't yet have a diagnosis and is pretty new to the idea of LDs. It gives thorough functional descriptions of the breakdowns that occur in a lot of areas that affect learning & gives some strategies to deal with them. After that, I like Overcoming Dyslexia and Dyslexic Advantage.
Lecka
Oh, I like that book, too :)
thundersweet
Ok, great. I am finished with Overcoming Dyslexia. I'll start on Mislabeled Child next. Thanks, Sandy
Lecka
I have ended up finding a lot of pertinent information for my son in an early chapter about listening. I didn't realize it the first time I read the book though.
