cathmom
I was looking at rental ads on Craigslist and keep seeing hydro mentioned. It's not heat or hot water, because I see them mentioned separately. What is it?
LucyStoner
I assume it refers to hydroelectricity...electrical power (in this case I guess lights) generated by dams on rivers. I am not Canadian but the bulk of my state's electricity is traditionally generated from hydro powered dams. Think Hoover and Grand Coulee dams. South of the Canadian border, this is mostly just out West.
Embassy
Hydro refers to the electric bill.
cathmom
Can you tell I've never been out west? Thanks, all. That makes sense now!
Audrey
Yep. Hydro = hydroelectricity. I believe all the western provinces are heavy on hydro for electricity production.
AHASRADA
Yep. Hydro = hydroelectricity. I believe all the western provinces are heavy on hydro for electricity production. Back East as well! Hydro Quebec not only supplies all of the electricity for the province, it sells to some New England states as well. I had the same confusion when first looking at rental listings. I thought it must be the water bill (fortunately, the water bill has not turned out to be high at all, around $100 per year, so I'm glad for my misunderstanding!).
