jhschool
We are planning to have DS use Exploring Creation With Chemistry, 2nd Ed. (Apologia) plus an AP Chemistry prep book next year, with the intent of having him take the AP Chemistry Exam in May 2014. The Apologia book is described simply as a college prep course. I just realized there is another book by Apologia, Advanced Chemistry in Creation, 2nd Ed. which states in their description that this one prepares students for the AP Chemistry Exam. Could one do the 1st book (Exploring Creation With Chemistry) and be able to understand the AP Chemistry Prep book enough to do well on the AP Chemistry test? Or is it necessary to go through the second one? Any experiences?
mjbucks1
My ds did Apologia Chemistry (first book) last year. He is now taking AP Chem with ChemAdvantage. He said he did not feel the first book would be nearly enough. I have heard of people doing both Apologia books and then taking the AP Chem exam, but I have no experience doing that. Alice
I think you would need both Apologia books. I’m the assistant teacher for a co-op class using the Advanced Chem class. It’s quite advanced and even then the teacher is spending the last month or so before the AP test on concepts that she thinks might be on the AP test that are not covered in the Apologia classes. I really don’t think you could do it with just the first text.
jhschool
Thank you very much! I will make sure that I purchase both Chemistry Apologia books. We will try to do them both in a year if that is possible so that DS can take the AP exam in May 2014. If he doesn't do well, I will have him take the AP Chemadvantage class the following school year and then retake the AP Chem Exam in May 2015. Thanks again!
