Esse Quam Videri
U.S. Standard and metric? DD is in SM 3B and when she is working on a review and needs a reminder, I just tell her. Should I go ahead and have her memorize these?
nmoira
Nope. IMHO these fall into the "learn through use" category. I do always ask for a best guess before giving the conversion factor though.
lmrich
I think some are helpful. 12 = 1 foot etc. Others like 2 pints = a quart not so much. My measuring cups and bowls have it written along the side anyways in case I need it.
Dana
Absolutely. It also has helped my son really want the US to switch to metric.
Plink
Yes, but I don't expect perfection yet, and we review often. I write them on an index card and toss it in the box-of-stuff-we-should-know. We go through a couple dozen every day. The cards are rather random: What are the levels of taxonomy? Recite the 23rd Psalm. Skip count by 7s. Where is PA? What does botany mean? How many cups in a pint? Etc. When they get a card wrong, I intentionally review it again the next day, so at first the conversions stayed at the front alot. Now they are just part of our regular rotation.
nmoira
Absolutely. It also has helped my son really want the US to switch to metric. If that's all it takes, I vote for it being compulsory nationwide, with required testing before running for political office. :D
Crimson Wife
Yes, I do expect it eventually. We do regular math lessons M-Th and then spend Fridays on reviews. For a long, long, LONG time after DD finished SM 3B she worked on Imperial unit conversions as part of Friday reviews.
